As you know, I've made something of a meal pointing out one of the stupider ideas that Elly has when dealing with her children. The stupid idea I happen to have in mind is when she comes to the stupid conclusion that when she plops one of the kids down someplace, the child will not move, act, speak or think. You'd have to be stupid to think that a child would sit inertly like a doll or something just because it would be convenient and you'd have to be even stupider to get angry with the kid for doing something you really should have anticipated he or she would do. As any number of strips attest, Elly is exactly stupid enough to think that a child will happily sit still for Mommy and stupid enough to think that since the kid did move, he or she hates Mommy and wants to make a fool of her.

I told you that story to tell you about John's blind-spot. As we all know, John loves to think that he's the smartest person in the strip. According to him, he's far smarter than the woman he conned into thinking that he was completely helpless around the house and he's definitely smarter than the kids who eat his food, spend his money and live in his house without contributing anything in return. As far as he can see, said children are completely unaware of their surroundings. This is as it should be so that he, the man, can reign supreme as the only one with his head in the game.

The problem is that his children aren't the stupid, oblivious nitwits he needs them to be. Every so often, they make the mistake of reminding Daddy that no, they aren't little dummies he can get to believe crap without thinking about what it means. Instead of being grateful that his children can think for themselves, John is outraged. Having children who think is seen as an affront and a challenge to his masculinity. This sort of thing is why it's very hard to understand why he sees himself as a good father with bad kids. I tend to think that the adjectives need to be swapped around to fit the facts.

And even though Lynn tried to chuck it down a memory-hole and pretend that it never happened, let's not forget that he beat his child for asking him a question he couldn't quite answer. And this is what Liz wants to marry a guy just like.

The horrifying thing about that is why he couldn't answer it. Having to admit that no, Michael doesn't owe his parents for giving birth to him goes against everything boomer trash like John stand for. How dare Mike question the concept that it's the job of everyone else in the world to take care of John and Elly's generation.

My parents never beat me, but it took years of me being in debilitating pain from my back for my father to realize that I couldn't make whatever I wanted happen just by trying real hard. My mother wasn't as bad, but she was bad enough. I see other people of my generation and younger get disrespected and despised by their Baby Boomer parents all the time for not being able to magic a perfect job out of nowhere in a horrible economy.

But... they're not all like that. I've never met one who wasn't irl (online's different), but they can't all be like that; there are plenty of boomers who have been poor their whole lives and who understand life's not something you have complete control over. I think it's a middle and upper-class thing, and likely a white thing too. I don't know what taught them that getting a lovely house and 2 cars in a beautiful neighborhood, being able to pay all your bills and have lots left over for luxuries and savings, and not having health problems was something everyone could do, but it would be an interesting sociological study.

I came in at the tail end of the baby boom, and I sure don't have that nice, cushy, life you describe. It's the people born between 46 and 54 who have that attitude, not the people born after 1955 or so.

Well, now. Since "born between 1946 and 1954" describes Lynn, JSTF and Flapandhonk, it's sort of no wonder that they act as if certain things are a minimum cinch to achieve. It's why jobs just fall in the Pattersons' laps and it's why Lynn talks shit about how anyone can get ahead.

True. My eldest sister and brother in law gave me no end of grief during the 81' recession because I couldn't find a job. I was lazy, doncha know, it wasn't that the unemployment rate (official) was 13%.

People like that just don't want to admit that they don't know what they're talking about. They assume that since there were jobs-jobs-jobs when they were coming up, getting work would be as easy as pie.

My mother was born in 1956. Like I said, I think it's middle and upper class.

The interesting thing is that most comic strips are written by and for stupid people who can't get it through their thick, soft, weak, entitled, ignorant boomer skulls that you can't make bricks without mud or straw.

In my experience, the "I hate you for having more toys and being young" is more of a 'greatest generation' thing, not the typical boomer attitude.

I've seen plenty of boomers with it. I think it's a typical old person attitude. It's been with us since at least ancient Greece, and it happens every generation.
