As a matter of fact, on some deep level they LIKE having socially inept children because it gets them hot. We've seen John get all huffy because his female children are trying to transfer their affections away from him, as well as his attempts to marry them to a facsimile of himself. This clearly indicates a barely-suppressed impulse towards incest. That would be bad enoough, if he were alone. However, Elly likes the idea that her son is a social incompetent because his pathetic flailings satiate her lust. Fortunately for her, her boy married a skittish young woman whose legitimate fears of abandonment fryustrate her obvious desire to whip him into shape. This way, she can have grandkids and her little boy will still be a juvenile, eager to return to Mommy's bosom (if not womb). They talk about wanting teir kids to grow up 'cause that's what they know we wanna hear; too bad for them we know better.
