The Pattersons may be a rather clannish group of idiots but they're still members of the greater North American civilization. After all, it's not like they have their own calendar or schedule of festivals. They send their kids to the same schools, watch the same TV shows and celebrate the same holidays as everyone else around them. That means as Meredith and Robin grow up, they'll start to mark time by the school year. What I mean is that they'd define an event with reference to midterms, exams, summer vacation, et cetera. They're already aware of a 'year' parallel to that of the educational; it's something I like to call the candy year. As you know, there are four holidays (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's day and Easter) during the school year that have a special candy that never appears at any other time. Given small children and their love of sweets, the 'candy' year might bring back fonder memories than their time in the class room.
