We know why Liz is interested in Anthony again. April summed it up when she said her older sister wanted him ONLY when she couldn't have him. Some warped part of the woman's psyche cannot BEAR the thought that he start deciding things on his own because she long ago made the lunatic presumption that she was final arbiter of his romantic destiny. The phrase that seems most appropriate in describing her true feelings is "If I can't have him, no one can but if I CAN, I'm not interested'. This forces you to ask an interesting question: what psychological itch is he trying to scratch by becoming the Emergency Stand-by Penis for an irrational nitwit with a messiah complex? Is it simply because she's physically attractive that he sees warmth, decency, dignity and substance that aren't there? Does he yearn to be part of what he thinks is a better family than his own? Does the poor, sad fool not see that one day he'll end up as twisted and blind as John because he married an even more insane version of Elly? Paul Wright saw through the surface and saw the yawning void that is Liz's soul and got out before she totally wrecked his life. This sad bastard twisted himself into the living image of John and Elly Patterson's Ideal Son-in-Law for nothing. Said 'nothing', of course, blows Bronx Cheers at telephones because the man she wants to turn into a puppet has to work for a living instead of catering to her juvenile whims.
