As we've seen, Connie seems to be desperate enough to do anything to avoid being single. She doesn't care if she hooks up with a lowlife because she fears dying alone. She probably wouldn't even care if she got together with a married man. This is where Lynn's need to get her own back from Rod comes into play. As howtheduck and aprilp_katje have said, this story arc was a minor plot point when it first appeared so its heightened emphasis must be caused by Lynn's need to scratch a mental itch. She might, for instance, be trying to explain to herself how Rod's affair happened. We have on the one hand the husband she sees as a clod and we have a woman she thought of as a good friend; in strip terms, John and Connie. We next have said muttonhead husband showing how ungrateful he was to have a great catch like Lynn/Elly and a supposed friend desperate and needy enough to help him cheat on her. This might be a direction she could pursue in strip in some fashion. She might continue to write material that leads people to think that there's more to the John/Connie dynamic than meets the eye or may play up the Ted/Connie thing to show us Rod-as-ungrateful-twit all the more.
