The current sequence, as I mentioned the other day, is one of the first instances of John racing around like a big, dumb jerk and ogling pretty girls in Elly's presence. What's annoying about his doing so is that he isn't exactly subtle about it. As [livejournal.com profile] howtheduck reminds us, a good ogler is able to observe the subjects of his or her fantasy without calling attention to him or herself. John, idiot that he is, stands there slobbering like a fool in the midst of what in real life would be a mass of revolted femininity. Lynn seems to have not gotten the memo that explains that young women who have to deal with a man accompanied by his wife and children standing around leering as his loins stir are not going to stand around like robots; they instead are going to be disgusted by being the objects of a pervert's lust. Why this odd inability to see things from the young woman's point of view? Simple; Lynn has always been anxious about her looks. Given her delusion that she actually does look like Elly, it sort of follows that John simply cannot help himself but should, athe the same time, avoid temptation. She fears that he'll leave her for someone more attractive but at the same time condemns him for that fear. It's not hard to see what Rod did to cause Lynn to come to such a conclusion; he glanced a second longer at a pretty girl than she liked and he's been paying for it ever since.
