As we know, Elly seems to see Jean as a sort of resource to be exploited. Her role in the strip IS, after all, to remind John of various facts that Elly wants him to learn. Said facts are "Being thought of as nothing more that an appendage to the Big Man with no identity of her own is a fate worse than death", "Ted is scum he should be ashamed to know" and "Elly is always right so don't cheat on her with your harem."

The problem with that last thing is that John's staff don't actually think too highly of him. Leaving aside the fact that he's seen as being a high-strung ogre who's totally up his own ass, we have to contend with the fact that they are still convinced to this day that their arrogant rat-bastard idiot pig boss cheated on a wife who'd just had a child with some floozy named Fiona. I don't know what kind of screwed-up upbringing Lynn had to make her think this way but there is no way in HELL that a woman is going to yearn to latch onto the greasy piece of manure John's girls see him as being. What they'd do is to tell Elly to screw John on the alimony and custody like she's supposed to. This advice, sadly, would go unheeded owing to a very odd way of thinking Elly has which I will get into tomorrow.
