Mike Patterson and his love affair with stupidity.

As you've no doubt noticed, a lot of the trouble Mike gets himself into is trouble he could have easily avoided were he in the posssession of a functioning brain. From his stupidly antagonizing Elly to his witless inability to understand why people around him behave the way they do, it's not hard to see that he brings a lot of his problems on himself because he's too stupid to avoid them. It seems to me that the best example of this occurs deep into the middle years. What happened is that some mental pygmy named Wesley Bates got a bug in his shorts because the local transit authority jacked up the fares for a reason that he was too busy feeling martyred to understand. Since Mike is a clod who also doesn't take the time to get his facts straight and who is sort of a born follower anyway, it's sort of predictable that the dreary dodo stupidly joined the sort of protest that he objected to when Elly got talked into protesting the proposed demolition of the old town hall. What's more, he even managed to make a more ridiculous fool of himself owing to his being even less well informed about what the stakes were than when Elly saved the city from whatever non-existent disaster she was frightened of. What makes it all the worse is that John is wrong about Mike having learned a blasted thing from this. We are, after all, dealing with the chowderhead who, upon coming upon a car wreck, mentally curses out the first responders for getting in between him and recognition.
