I'm sure that if we were to do something Lynn would prefer us not do and look in on the Pattersons of 2018, we'd probably find that Elly still believes that she stopped associating with Anne Nichols because the woman "took back her adulterous husband" and thus wasn't fit company. The problem is that I happen to remember that their 'friendship' endured for two years or so past Anne finally twigging to his philandering. This means that Elly didn't give a crap who Steve slept with or how big a fool Anne made herself believing him until what really broke their relationship: Anne started working outside the home in order to help with the bills.

What this meant is that Anne no longer held up her end of the bargoon Elly imposed upon her and was no longer accessible for random, hour's long visits or there for Elly to dump a child on her when she got bored playing with her. Since Elly doesn't want to admit that she saw Anne less as a friend and more as a servant because she'd have to look in the mirror and see the jerk she is, she has to come up with a plausible excuse for defriending someone.
