Since we're rejoining the classic strip this Valentine's Day, I feel it fair to point out that next week's plotline is about John getting bent out of shape because the kids have so much stuff just lying around that they don't seem to appreciate. Elly's response is to offer him a hypocritical bit of fluff about how, since they're making up for their own deprived childhoods by giving their children the stuff their parents couldn't afford, he'd simply have to inure himself to clutter. Her saying so is almost as hilarious as her telling Mike that she hates to nag him about picking up his toys; in both cases, she's got it in her head that she's this really tolerant, forgiving person when she's sort of a thin-skinned old scold who loves to nurse grudges. What this means is that while John looks at the big pile of toys as some sort of 'proof' that his children are ungrateful, Elly tends to regard the fact that they hate Mommy and want her to be miserable. Neither of them are willing to admit that children actually do get bored and might want human contact instead of a big pile of stuff they don't really know what to do with.

I know that but I'm not sure Lynn does.

Well, of course she doesn't; she has no idea how a lot of things work.

Also if John and Elly are frustrated with stuff out, do the kids have a place for it?

I'm not sure where they could put it that wouldn't somehow be in John or Elly's way; there's lots of room in the Pattermanse for sewing and traaaaaaaaains but not much space for their children.

Well couldn't they use stuff like shelves in the kids' room or a box in the living room?

They do have those things; the problem is that Elly is a rather poor spokesfoob for the concept of tidiness and order. It's like how the father on Curtis groans constantly about how hard it is working at the DMV only to turn around and wonder why his son thinks that having a day job is for saps. In both cases, an idiot parent sabotages him or herself because they're too stupid to live.

At least on Foxtrot they lampshade it

I know; it doesn't change the fact that Andi Fox thinks that she's doing her family a favor by being a killjoy but at least she's a sympathetic muddlehead.

To be fair half of foxtrots humor comes from nerd jokes

And the other half from reactions to nerdiness.

Oh. Given some of the crap we've seen on CT, she'd probably have a fair amount of support.
