As we all know, one of the things that the Pattersons love to hold against Mira and Thérèse is that they give gifts to people instead of time. What this translates into is that Elly and her family count up all the time they spend with someone they want to impress and compare it with that spent by those that they presume to detest and whoever spends more time in that person’s presence wins. We see this when Elly puffs herself up for spending a lot of time sitting on her arse talking bullshit to Connie about what a great parent she is while either ignoring or recoiling in disgusted horror from Meredith, Robin and that odd, scary child that Anthony had with THAT WOMAN while denigrating Mira for only appearing every so often. It doesn’t matter a whit that Mira pays attention to them, treats them as if they’re people instead of parasites that might one day become human when they have horses their parents can own and that she and the family go out of their way to make sure she has as little time with them as possible, counting out the moments is all that matters to Flapandhonk.  We also see this when Lizardbreath echoes the same sort of hateful, ignorant codswallop Elly used to defame Paul by declaring that she might not be her but she’s there; it would never occur to her that Anthony had his pal Great Big Freaking Jerk Divorce Lawyer penalize his ex for not magically turning into Susie Homemaker just because she gave birth like he and John believe God intends and even if it did, it wouldn’t matter because she confuses time spent being horrified by the scary little three year old whose being far more clever at four than she will ever be with the longing of a lonely, confused and ill-used woman being demonized by the soft, weak, shallow and entitled vermin who infest a grotesque parking lot for human Fords named Milborough, Ontario, Canada.

Not gifts; loans. With loans, the children know where they stand but with gifts, they have to worry about Mira using her family politics to enslave them.

Human Fords. Bingo.

And, yeah, Pattergifts are like Don Corleone's favors.

That's for damned sure; every time Elly or John bleat the hateful, demeaning phrase "family politics", the cynical jerk in me mutters "Projecting much, Patterswine?" If any character in the strip is the victim of family politics, it's the "spoiled", "picky-faced", "Martian" "princess we didn't know we'd raised" as she absorbs emotional abuse for not mindlessly trusting people who confuse their endless appetite to be vindicated for a deprived childhood that only exists inside their slimy minds with morality.

Yes, there's a whole novel right there.

Yes. Yes, it is a story fit to be made into a novel. What's more, it would be far more plausible than Stained Session or Blunt Carbo.
