John and April, Alone.

As has been said on many occasions, John and Anthony are amazingly similar. Both men use children as a means of controlling their spouses, bot whine when they don't get their way, are basically unsympathetic to the plight of the women in their lives, have inflated self-images. As a further parallel, John would get custody of the child he wanted: April. It may look to the off-hand observer that John would continue his proud tradition of neglect for the few years before she reached the age of majority but I can see him emulating Anthony's half-assed overparenting. After all, he'd have no intention to let Elly have yet another victory by getting custody, despite her probable lack of interest. Transmuting from a benign, asleep-at-the-switch dunce into a micromanaging nincompoop is a lateral move into a different realm of jackassery.

April can have chicken and couscous every night, not just when Elly is gone.

Yep. With her out of the picture, John will be forced to eat a more healthy diet. It's sad but true that real take-out food is far better for you than the greasy stuff Elly likes to cook. It has the secondary advantage of requiring less cleaning up. Not that John would revert to bachelor-age untidiness, not with an ex-wife to thwart.
